Do you still want to draw?

I'm in the mood for inspiring stories. The type that gives hope to old-aged late-bloomers that they still have a chance at hitting it big. If it's based on your own experience, the better. If you came from a family that just got by hard times, or if you were a reformed asshole who still found a way. The better.

Now, you do the talking. Tell me stories. I don't want to believe that only prodigies and early-achievers can make it big. I want to hear stories of underdog artists slower than me who still made it big (without killing themselves, no Van Goghs pls).

Do I?

Hells yeah!

I could write, but I end up reading like an angry hippie. I could play music, but I end up sounding like an old angry old fart.

But, then again, I could draw.

It's the only way I could say my piece and stick it to THE MAN without seeming like an angry old hippie-fart. Subversion, baby. But a classy kind of subversion.

But alas many factors keep me from working on it. I guess it's THE MAN's way of putting me out of the way, eh? But I'll keep stabbing, baby. I sound like a defeatist (in my posts, yeah), but I still keep stabbing. Even if it's little jabs at the thick bony armored parts. If I make a dent, then that means a lot to me.

To me way-aye, blow the man down.
A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet.
Give me some time to blow the man down!

The God Emperor of Man is the only inspiration you need. finding inspiration from other sources is an act of treason against the imperium!

I've just flat out refused to let go of my dreams.  It's no longer a case of wanting to "make it big", as I can see how the industry would look down at a 40-year old amateur like me, but of just doing what I like to do and showing it to people who'd take notice.  In the current situation, the Internet has been a godsend, as traveling to local and regional comicbook conventions is practically dead.  Furthermore, it pays to keep up the art practice and have an updated portfolio of work in case I do cross paths with those professionals.

For a while, there, it wasn't like I was seriously considering getting into the comicbook industry.  I had more or less given it up in the mid- to late 1990s as a result of being laid off from what had promised to be a long-term career in the publishing branch of a major company with local headquarters.  However, putting down the pencil isn't so easy once you've gotten into it.  There have been fits and starts, but I always shook off the Procrastination Bug...

What inspired me to pick up the pencils and paper most recently was my joining DeviantART and finding a place to show off stuff, both old and new.  I'll continue to work on some original ideas that I've held on to through the years until I have something of a "published" story or two that might get notice.  Until then, I plug away at it and hope that the opportunity strikes from unexpected (and, preferably, independent) directions.
What is the terror of death?
That we die our work incomplete.
What is the joy of life?
To die knowing our task is done.

Well, I've heard of this senior woman who just started to learn how to paint during her last days. Her works have now fetched high sums.
